Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family:
“My name is Melissa. I am a 29 year old driven, hard working, people pleasing mama and
newly wed. This past December I was so lucky to marry my love, Wally. We have two
beautiful daughters. Lola is our 4 year old clown, and Ruby is our 5 month old sugar. Those
girls keep me on my toes. When I am not “working” at home, which is the best and most
important job ever, I am in the Emergency Room working as a nurse.”
What is the inspiration behind your shop:
“The inspiration behind Brave Little Darling comes from my favorite Instagram shops and my
children. About the same time that I started making teething and nursing necklaces for my
daughter I discovered the excistance of small shops on Instagram. I loved seeing amazing
clothing and products artists were pouring themselves into and I decided to jump on! I have
always found myself to be a creative and resourceful person and I love a challenge. I decided
to start with the nursing and teething necklaces because they are a beautiful and functional
accessory for parents of young children. I hope to add more of a variety of items to our shop.
I would love to add more headbands, leggings and rompers. It will all come with together with
time as I’ve quickly learned starting a shop is not an easy task. But as difficult as it may be, I
love that I can stay home with my children and that my work hours are flexible. I might stay
up until 3 or 4 in the morning sometimes, but I am grateful that I get to spend my day loving
on my children. “
If you had to choose one item in your shop as your personal favorite, what would it be and
why?
“The teething and nursing necklaces are definitely my favorite item in the shop. They are not
only beautiful but totally functional with young children. I love that I am able to accessorize an
outfit with something that makes my daughter happy. They are a wonderful distraction while
wearing or feeding your baby, either by bottle or breast. I love that my daughter has the
ability to play with something visually and tactilely stimulating rather than pinching me, pulling
my hair, or getting bored and restless. The necklaces are lightweight and comfortable,
featuring a fabric tie around your neck, which is nice because no matter how hard my
daughter might pull on the necklace, it will not dig into my neck. I love that there is an option
to add a wooden teething ring to any necklace, making it customizable for mom and baby’s
preference.”
What are some of your favorite patterns and materials to work with?
“I love working with plain colors as much as I love working with bright and colorful patterns. It
is an adventure every time I hit the fabric store. I love looking different colors and designs
and imagining them on all sorts of projects. If I had to pick my favorite necklaces we offer in
the shop I’d have to go with Speckled Gold or Free Bird. The Speckled Gold is so beautiful
but neutral, it goes with almost any outfit or color. And I love how colorful and bright Free Bird
is, it reminds me of a summer day on a sandy, sunny beach.”
What tips do you have for any new/first time mamas out there?
“Adjusting to motherhood is undeniably rough. All of a sudden you have a never ending list of
things to be done. But the next time you hold your baby and stare into their beautiful eyes
remember this, YOU ARE THEIR EVERYTHING! While life gets more complicated for us as
parents, life for a baby is simple, they need one thing…you. You have the ability to give your
child everything they need to thrive. Your touch, your nourishment, your love, your warmth.
Too often mothers run themselves ragged trying to do it all. Remember your children are only
young once, and the years fly by way too fast. Cherish your children and every day you get
with them. Its ok if your floor is messy or the dishes aren’t done, those arent the memories
you’ll keep. So give yourself a break from chores and responsibilities that can wait, and give
your time to your baby and your family instead.”
