Spring Cleaning Before Fall

in Projects, Style on 09/07/16

Okay okay.. I know it isn’t Spring anymore, but who says its has to be just to do some Spring cleaning?

Fall Capsule | Spring Cleaning | Why you need to spring clean your closet for fall | Spring cleaning and creating a wardrobe capsule

The decision

My beautiful friends Amber and Mary were cleaning out their closets and doing capsules! I have been telling my husband for a while that I wanted to do that so I decided to do it too!

I would get rid of clothes here and there, but I have never gotten rid of so many clothes at one time. In the end I had two giant trash bags full, stretching at the seams.

When I made the decision to do it, I gave myself a few days to prepare. I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t going to back out of it.

The Attachment

The reason it took me so long to commit to something like this was because I was emotionally attached. A lot of my clothes carried memories. They also carried hopes or comforts. Hopes that I might be able to fit into it one day. Comfort from hiding the parts of my body I didn’t like.

“Maybe I will wear it one day when I have lost some weight.”

“This has a few holes in it, but this goes with everything.”

And so on, and so on.

Some shirts I wore a lot when my husband I were dating – yeah, that long ago.

It was hard to let the emotional attachment go. Luckily, I prepped myself emotionally and then did it quickly when the time came. That let me do it without talking myself back into something I knew I was never going to wear again.

The Process of Spring Cleaning

I started by taking all my clothes off the hangers and out of  my drawers and laid it in a big pile on the bed. Then I put it in two piles on the floor. One pile was for clothes I wanted to keep and the other was things that I could get rid of.

If it didn’t fit, if it had holes in it, or I didn’t wear it often – it belonged in the pile to get rid of. Like I said before – I had to do this step fast. If I thought about it too much, I would reason with myself and try to keep it when I knew I would’t wear it.

After the piles had been made, I bagged up the “give-aways” and separated the “keep” pile. If you want, you can have a pile for each season, but it worked for me to only make two.

I made a pile for Spring/Summer and a pile for Fall/Winter. I boxed up my Spring/Summer clothes and hung up and put away the rest.

The weight

After the seasons were separated, I noticed I was missing a few staples. Luckily, after the long process, that meant I could go shopping for a few items I needed!

I loooooovveeee this post from Sincerely Jenna Marie – this showed me what I was missing and what I could go shopping for if it was something I was missing! Here are some of my favorites, too:

I thought I would be nervous and wishing I had some of my clothes back – but I don’t at all! A weight has been lifted and it feels so so so good! I love that I can walk into my closet and be excited about my clothes again! And when spring comes around again, I will put all my Fall stuff away and take out spring! It will be like a whole new closet to get excited about again!

If you have been thinking about doing this – stop thinking and do it! Just make sure you have a friend there with you to help you and keep you from keeping things you shouldn’t. I know that if my friend wasn’t there, I would not have gotten rid of everything that I did. I might have not even done it! Thanks Amber 😉

Now get out there and do some ” Spring Cleaning! “

I love “Spring cleaning” my closet! It always feels so good! The problem is that I barely refill it though so I just keep having less and less clothes to pull from, lol. I should really do something about that!

I am such afresh when it comes to cleaning anything! I like how you shared your true feelings of why you couldn’t get rid of clothes! Super helpful for others in the same boat? I am a shopping addict and the only way I can buy new is by getting rid of the old?
